Our family is attempting to travel to all 50 states through creative road trips. We prefer to choose a route which may have several destination stops throughout the trip. This often results in spending a short amount of time in one city. We love to get the flavor of the place that we are visiting by experiencing dining experiences, seeing a well-known icon from that area or simply experiencing the understated charm of that particular area.

This post shares about our New England Road Trip, particularly our time in Maine.

All of the details of our New England Road Trip can  be found at  50 State Journey- The Ultimate New England Fall Road Trip.

We arrived in coastal Maine from our drive through New Hampshire and Vermont. Read about that portion of the trip here.

We arrived in Ogunquit in the evening. We chose to go to Perkins Cove which is a historic fishing village in Ogunquit. My husband was eager to try a lobster roll. We chose to try one at the Lobster Shack. He enjoyed it! We are from Indiana so lobster rolls are rare for us! We learned on this trip that there are various types of lobster rolls. Maine lobster rolls are served chilled.

After having dinner, we headed back to our hotel. We were staying at the Colonial Inn in Ogunquit. This is an adorable hotel. We had a great stay. They won my girls over with warm chocolate chip cookies and cider in the lobby. We really did enjoy this location and the accommodations.

The next morning, we wanted to walk the Marginal Way cliff walk. The views were stunning. We even got to see some surfers conquering the waves. The walk is an easy walk that ends at Perkins Cove. It was fun to see Perkins Cove in the daylight. We stopped at some boutiques and did some window shopping. We also found a lighthouse Christmas ornament as I like to get a new ornament from every state that I visit.

After finishing our Marginal Way walk, we walked back toward the downtown portion of Ogunquit. On main street, there were even more shops and restaurants. It is such a cute area!

We had also been told that Kennebunkport was a cute, coastal town. So, that afternoon we headed North. Kennebunkport also offered a bustling shopping and restaurant area. We stopped in at a beautiful gallery of jewelry made of sea glass. We learned that it is quite common to find sea glass in Kennebunkport. We checked out a few of the beaches, but, unfortunately ended up empty-handed.

While in Kennebunkport, we had lunch at Allison's Restaurant. We had great service and the food was delicious. Bet you can't guess what my husband ordered- this time a lobster roll trio.

We finished our time driving around Kennebunkport a bit. Kennebunkport is also famous for being the location of Walker's Point which is where the Bush estate is. It was considered the Summer White House during the Bush administration and has a long history of being a vacation home for the Bush family. We were able to get a picture from the car.

After our time exploring coastal Maine, we headed to Rockport, Massachusetts for the next leg of our trip. This was about a two hour drive and let us see more of the coastal New England towns.
