Our family is attempting to travel to all 50 states through creative road trips. We prefer to choose a route which may have several destination stops throughout the trip. This often results in spending a short amount of time in one city. We love to get the flavor of the place that we are visiting by experiencing dining experiences, seeing a well-known icon from that area or simply experiencing the understated charm of that particular area.
Our Spring Break trip of 2024 resulted in a short stop in Savannah, Georgia. We were staying on Tybee Island and Savannah is just a quick 25-30 minute drive from Tybee. I loved the old charm of Savannah.
There are several hop on and off trolleys in Savannah that will give you a historical tour. We weighed the cost for our family and decided we would prefer to walk to take in the flavor of the city.
We started our day with a visit to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum. Juliette Gordon Low is the founder of Girl Scouts. She is a household name for us as I was active in scouting, one of my daughters is pursuing her gold award and another is a former Girl Scout. Active Girl Scouts get a slight discount on ticket prices. Even if you aren't familiar with Girl Scouts, I still think this is a fun historic stop. You get a tour of a historic home and hear about a pioneering woman of her day. My husband even enjoyed the history.
After our visit, we decided to explore the city and take in some lunch. Savannah is known for beautiful parks. We walked through Forsythe Park which is a well-known park on our way to lunch.

We grabbed lunch at the Crystal Beer Parlor. Food was good, reasonable and rest assured that this location was family-friendly. The restaurant had a hometown feel to it. Be aware that many of the restaurants near the river have long waits and require reservations.
Next, we walked around River Street and took in sights near the Waterfront. It is really a beautiful area of Savannah.
Our last stop in Savannah was at Leopold's Ice Cream. It has been a Savannah staple since 1919 and is an iconic stop. Be aware- the line is always long, but typically moves quickly. On our visit, they had an employee standing outside to answer any questions in order to expedite ordering. We enjoyed it and it was well worth the wait.

On our drive back to Tybee, we spent some time driving Jones Street. This historic brick-paved street of Savannah is considered one of the most beautiful as it has many historic homes and character.
We loved our day in Savannah and would highly recommend a visit!
