Our family is attempting to travel to all 50 states through creative road trips. We prefer to choose a route which may have several destination stops throughout the trip. This often results in spending a short amount of time in one city. We love to get the flavor of the place that we are visiting by experiencing dining experiences, seeing a well-known icon from that area or simply experiencing the understated charm of that particular area.

Our Spring Break trip of 2024 resulted in spending time at Tybee Island, Georgia. This was a longer portion of our trip as we arrived on the island on Monday and left on Saturday morning. Below, I have summarized some of the highlights. We also took a day trip to Savannah. Savannah highlights are linked in a separate post.

During our time at Tybee, we stayed at the Beachside Colony Resort. We were not directly on the beach, but it was easily accessible by a short walk. The short walk was well-worth the cost savings for our family. The staff at Beachside is very helpful. Before our stay, we had called with some questions and they were more than accommodating.

The highlight of our trip was an ecology tour that I happened upon whlie researching this trip. I love to tell everyone about it as it was a 10/10 experience for everyone in our family. Check out more information at Tybee Beach Ecology Trips. The tour was $25 per person and well worth it. Dr. Joe is a scientist/ biologist that gives you a personal tour of the Tybee coast. Dr. Joe will give you tools to help you find beach critters. It is so hands on and interesting! We all loved it!

Another highlight of our trip, was a sunset dolphin tour. My husband captured the picture of the lighthouse at the top of the page from our dolphin tour boat. So fun to see the dolphins and to catch the sunset. We used Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventure Tours and had a great time. (Check Groupon for any deals!)

Of course, we spent some time on the beach as well. We enjoyed our beach time, but it was a little cool and windy during our time there. We made the best of it with some kites that we had brought from home. We all still had a great time!

I had a goal of getting family pictures while we were at the beach. I had read about the ideal place to have pictures taken. Don't underestimate a setting sun, coordinating outfits and a selfie stick/ phone tripod. We chose to go to the beach area near the North Tybee Island Lighthouse. I was pleased how they turned out for a diy project.

One day was chilly so we took a break from the beach and visited the Fort Pulaski National Monument. It was a nice activity to see some nature and learn about some historic battles. There is a $10 per adult fee. However, my youngest daughter was in fourth grade so we entered free on the park pass provided by Every Kid Outdoors partnership with the National Parks system.

We also took this opportunity to purchase National Park Passport books for our daughters. That was one of the best decisions that we made. We have since filled it with stamps during our travels and even turned it into a mini scrapbook as we document visits with pictures as well in their passport books. (More about this in a later blog.)

Of course, we sampled some of the local restaurants on Tybee as well. We visited the Crab Shack which is a widely known Tybee restaurant. The wait was long, but I love any restaurant with patio twinkle lights. Even better, while you wait, you can visit baby alligators and literally talk to tropical birds in their sanctuary. Definitely a fun stop for young kids. The food was enjoyable and my husband enjoyed his seafood boil. (Peel and eat shrimp and crab legs are far too much work for me on vacation, but he was willing to put in the effort! ) I do think this is more of a destination for the atmosphere rather than the quality of food.

Another restaurant that served good food and sunset views was A-J's Dockside Restaurant. This provided a fun, family night. We got to see sunset views and there was a gentleman playing guitar all evening. Live music and the atmosphere were definitely a treat.

Another well-known Tybee staple is the Sugar Shack. We visited for treats, but missed the opportunity for a photo. Kids will love it. It offers ice cream, candy and has fun, vibrant decor.

We also spent a day in Savannah which is roughly a 30 minute drive from Tybee. We loved our day in Savannah as well! Check out my post about Savannah here.

All in all, we had an enjoyable time in Tybee. It was a great way to explore Georgia. Furthermore, we found it to be a budget-friendly location. As the locals would say, I hope you enjoy some "Tybee Time."
